The current Canadian passport has an international ranking of 6 on the Henley Passport Index, overtaking the United States, which is now ranked 7th. This remarkable rise in passport ranking underscores Canada’s strong international reputation and its commitment to facilitating global mobility for its citizens.
Enhanced Design and Security Measures
The upgraded passport, which was unveiled in May 2023 and is currently being rolled out, boasts a complete redesign and cutting-edge security measures.
In the year 2023, Canadian travelers can enjoy expanded visa-free access to a whopping 186 countries around the world, a significant leap from the previous year’s 185.
A Decade of Passport Ranking Fluctuations
Over the past decade, the ranking of the Canadian passport has experienced its fair share of fluctuations. In 2014, it soared to its highest position, securing the second spot on the Henley Index. However, by 2016, it had slipped to sixth place, where it remained for the next four years.
The COVID-19 pandemic took a toll on passport rankings, pushing Canada’s passport down to 8th and 9th positions due to public health restrictions and border closures. Fortunately, in the latest rankings, it has bounced back to its pre-pandemic standing at number 6.
Expanding Visa-Free Travel Opportunities
Canada’s generosity in terms of visa-free travel has also expanded. On June 6, 2023, Canada added 13 more countries to its list of visa-free nations. These nations include Panama, the Caribbean island states of Antigua and Barbados, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad & Tobago, Costa Rica, Uruguay, Argentina, Morocco, Seychelles, Thailand, and the Philippines. This move brings the total number of countries and territories eligible for visa-free or eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) access to 66.
Canada’s Passport Power in 2023
As of 2023, the Canadian passport holds its status as one of the most powerful passports globally. It grants visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 186 countries and territories, allowing Canadian passport holders to explore these destinations without the need for a visa or with the option of obtaining one upon arrival.
Final Words
In summary, Canada’s passport has ascended to new heights, ranking 6th on Henley’s Index, and offers its citizens the opportunity to explore a vast array of countries without the hassle of obtaining visas. This achievement reflects Canada’s commitment to international connectivity and global mobility.
