Western Australia Occupation List 2026 (Updated) | WASMOL State Nomination Guide
📌 Updated 2026 — WASMOL

Western Australia Occupation List 2026
(WASMOL — Updated)

Your complete and updated guide to the Western Australian Skilled Migration Occupation List (WASMOL) — WASMOL schedules, nomination streams, eligibility, priority sectors, visa pathways, and the full official WA occupation list for 2026.

Program Year: 2025 – 2026
State: Western Australia

Western Australia Skilled Migration 2026 — Program Overview

Western Australia (WA) is one of Australia's fastest-growing economies, driven by its world-leading mining, resources, construction, and healthcare sectors. It is also one of the most generous states when it comes to skilled migration nomination places, making the Western Australia occupation list a top priority for skilled applicants targeting Australia PR.

The Western Australian Skilled Migration Occupation List — known as WASMOL — is managed by WA Migration Services on behalf of the WA State Government. For the 2025–26 program year, WA temporarily paused new invitations from 1 July 2025 while awaiting its federal allocation, then resumed with full invitation rounds from December 2025 onwards.

2026 Program Update: Western Australia's WASMOL 2026 contains over 600 occupations across three streams. With 5,000 total nomination places — the highest of any Australian state this year — WA remains one of the most accessible and practical pathways to Australian permanent residency. Always verify the current occupation list directly at immi.homeaffairs.gov.au before submitting your application.

What Is the Western Australia Occupation List (WASMOL)?

The Western Australian Skilled Migration Occupation List — commonly referred to as the WASMOL, the WA occupation list, or the occupation list of Western Australia — is the official list of occupations that WA Migration Services uses when assessing applications for state nomination.

When your occupation appears on the WASMOL, it means Western Australia has identified an ongoing or emerging workforce need in that area. However, appearing on the list is the beginning of your eligibility assessment — not a guarantee of nomination. WA compares all applicants within the same occupation and selects those who best meet its current labour market priorities.

WASMOL vs Federal Occupation Lists — Key Difference

These two lists serve completely different purposes and are often confused by applicants:

  • Federal occupation lists (SOL, STSOL, ROL) — managed by the Department of Home Affairs — determine which national visa subclasses you are eligible to apply for.
  • WASMOL — managed by WA Migration Services — determines whether Western Australia is willing to nominate you for those visas based on its own state workforce priorities.

Federal rules set the framework. WA decides who it wants to nominate within that framework. For applicants who are eligible at the federal level but not receiving regular invitations, WA state nomination can be a powerful and faster alternative route to Australia PR.

💡
Why WA Nomination Is So Valuable: A WA nomination under Subclass 190 adds +5 bonus points to your SkillSelect EOI. A nomination under Subclass 491 adds +15 bonus points. In a competitive migration environment, these additional points can be the difference between receiving an Invitation to Apply and waiting indefinitely in the pool.

How Often Does the WA Occupation List Change?

The occupation list of Western Australia is reviewed and updated periodically — typically annually but sometimes more frequently based on workforce data and nomination capacity. Occupations can be added when shortages emerge, paused when allocation limits are reached, or removed when demand stabilises. This is why relying on outdated lists is a common and costly mistake. Always check the current WASMOL before planning your migration strategy.

WA Visa Pathways — Subclass 190 & Subclass 491

Western Australia nominates skilled migrants under two federal visa categories. Understanding the difference between these two pathways is essential before selecting your strategy.

Subclass 190

Skilled Nominated Visa — Permanent

Western Australia's most competitive nomination pathway. Grants full permanent residency, allowing you to live and work anywhere in Australia without restrictions.

Visa TypePermanent Residency
2026 Places (WA)3,000

Employment RequiredYes — full-time contract

Subclass 491

Skilled Work Regional Visa — Provisional

A 5-year provisional visa for skilled workers committed to living and working in regional Western Australia. After 3 years meeting residency and income requirements, you become eligible for permanent residency via Subclass 191.

Visa TypeProvisional (5 Years)
2026 Places (WA)2,000

📋
Regional WA Note: For WA state nomination purposes, Perth and surrounding areas are treated as "regional" under the 491 visa pathway. However, once you receive the visa, you must still comply with federal 491 conditions which define regional Australia separately. Always confirm current regional postcode boundaries with the Department of Home Affairs when making long-term plans.

WASMOL — Three Streams Explained

The WASMOL is structured into three distinct streams, each targeting a different applicant profile and with different eligibility requirements. Understanding which stream your occupation falls under is critical before submitting your Registration of Interest (ROI).

Stream 1

General Stream — WASMOL Schedule 1

A focused list primarily covering healthcare, medical, and specialist professional occupations. This schedule has stricter requirements but higher nomination priority.

  • Minimum 1 year work experience required
  • Full-time employment contract required for Subclass 190
  • No contract required for Subclass 491
  • Health and specialist roles prioritised
Stream 2

General Stream — WASMOL Schedule 2

A broader list that includes trades, education, engineering, ICT, hospitality, agriculture, and other professional roles in addition to health occupations.

  • No minimum work experience required
  • Full-time employment contract required for Subclass 190 (except construction trades)
  • Contract not required for Subclass 491
  • Broader occupation coverage
Stream 3

Graduate Stream — Graduate Occupation List (GOL)

Designed for skilled international graduates who completed their qualifications in Western Australia and are seeking to remain and work in the state after graduation.

  • Must have studied and graduated in WA
  • Occupations listed on Graduate Occupation List
  • Available for both 190 and 491 pathways
  • Strong employment outcomes required
⚠️
WA Ranking Framework: Western Australia does not rank applicants by points score alone. The structured ranking order for the General Stream is: (1) WA residents in priority industry sectors first, (2) WA residents in other sectors, (3) offshore applicants in priority sectors, (4) offshore applicants in other sectors. Within each group, points score then determines ranking. A construction trade applicant at 75 points in a priority sector may be invited before a non-priority occupation applicant at 90 points.

Priority Industry Sectors — Western Australia 2026

WA Migration Services prioritises nominations from specific high-demand sectors when conducting invitation rounds. Applicants in these industries are invited before others — even if their points score is lower than non-priority applicants.

Eligibility Requirements for WA State Nomination

Being on the WASMOL is the first requirement, but Western Australia evaluates your entire profile before issuing a nomination invitation. Here are the key eligibility criteria:

  • Active EOI in SkillSelect: Maintain an active Expression of Interest with Western Australia as your preferred state, submitted through the Department of Home Affairs SkillSelect portal.
  • Occupation on WASMOL: Your nominated ANZSCO occupation must appear on the current WASMOL Schedule 1, Schedule 2, or the Graduate Occupation List, and be marked as "Available" for your preferred visa subclass.
  • Valid Skills Assessment: A positive skills assessment from the correct Australian assessing authority for your ANZSCO occupation code.
  • Minimum 65 Points: You must score at least 65 points on the Department of Home Affairs points test, including any state nomination bonus points.
  • English Proficiency: At least Competent English (IELTS 6 in each band). Certain health and regulated occupations require higher English levels for registration in WA.
  • Employment Contract (190 only): For Subclass 190 under Schedule 1 and Schedule 2, a full-time employment contract in WA of at least 6 months from the nomination application date is required. Full-time means at least 35 hours per week. This requirement does not apply to Subclass 491 applicants or construction trades workers.
  • Work Experience (Schedule 1): Minimum 1 year of skilled work experience in your nominated occupation for WASMOL Schedule 1 applications.
  • Commitment to WA: A genuine intention to live and work in Western Australia after visa grant.
Occupation Ceilings: WA applies occupation caps within each round. This means that even if you have a high points score, your occupation may not receive an invitation if its allocation ceiling has been reached. Occupations with low current demand can stagnate regardless of points. Use our free eligibility assessment to check whether your occupation is actively receiving WA invitations.

How to Apply for WA State Nomination — Step by Step

  1. 1

Check Your Occupation on the WASMOL

Search for your occupation by ANZSCO code on the official WA Migration Services website and the Department of Home Affairs. Confirm it is marked "Available" for your intended visa subclass (190, 491, or both) and identify which WASMOL schedule it falls under.

  2. 2

    Complete Your Skills Assessment

Obtain a positive skills assessment from the relevant Australian assessing authority for your ANZSCO occupation. For engineers this is Engineers Australia, for IT professionals it is ACS, for nurses it is ANMAC. This step typically takes 2–6 months and must be completed before submitting your EOI.

  3. 3

    English Language Test

Complete a recognised English test — IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, or OET. Aim for the highest possible score. Use our AU Points Calculator to see exactly how your English score affects your total points and nomination chances.

  4. 4

    Submit EOI via SkillSelect

Log in to your ImmiAccount and submit your Expression of Interest through SkillSelect. Select Western Australia as your preferred state and nominate your visa subclass (190, 491, or both). Your EOI can be updated at any time to improve your points score.

  5. 5

Submit Registration of Interest (ROI) to WA Migration Services

Submit a Registration of Interest through the WA Migration Services portal. This is a separate step from your federal SkillSelect EOI. WA uses your ROI to rank you against other applicants in your occupation based on residency, sector priority, and points score.

  6. 6

Receive Invitation and Apply for Nomination

If selected, WA Migration Services will issue a nomination invitation. Respond promptly — gather your employment contract, skills assessment, English test results, identity documents, and work experience evidence. Prepare everything in advance; do not wait for an invitation to start your paperwork.

  7. 7

Lodge Visa Application with the Department of Home Affairs

Once WA formally nominates you in SkillSelect, the Department of Home Affairs will issue your federal Invitation to Apply. Submit your complete visa application through ImmiAccount with police clearances, medical results, all supporting documents, and your WA nomination confirmation.

Frequently Asked Questions — Western Australia Occupation List 2026

What is the Western Australia occupation list (WASMOL) used for? +
The WASMOL guides WA Migration Services in deciding which skilled migrants it may nominate for the Subclass 190 (permanent) and Subclass 491 (regional provisional) visas under Australia's state nomination framework.
Is the Western Australia skilled occupation list the same as the federal list? +
No. The federal occupation lists managed by the Department of Home Affairs determine visa eligibility at the national level. The WASMOL is WA's own state-specific list that reflects Western Australia's current workforce priorities and is managed separately by WA Migration Services.
Does being on the WASMOL guarantee a WA nomination? +
No. Having your occupation on the WASMOL makes you eligible to be considered for nomination — it does not place you in an automatic queue. WA ranks applicants using a structured framework based on residency, sector priority, and points score. Two applicants with the same occupation can have very different outcomes.
Will the Western Australia skilled occupation list 2026 change significantly? +
Major changes are unlikely. WA's occupation list tends to evolve incrementally based on workforce data, economic conditions, and nomination capacity. Occupations tied to healthcare, construction, mining, and education have consistently remained on the list and are expected to continue doing so.
Is Western Australia a good pathway for Australia PR? +
Yes — with 5,000 total nomination places for 2026 (the highest of any state), WA is one of the most generous and accessible state nomination pathways available. This is particularly beneficial for applicants whose occupations align with WA's priority sectors.
Do I need a job offer in WA to apply for the Subclass 491? +
No. Unlike Subclass 190 under the General Stream (which requires a full-time employment contract), the Subclass 491 does not require a job offer or employment contract for state nomination under WASMOL Schedule 1 or Schedule 2. This makes 491 the more accessible pathway for offshore applicants.

Western Australia State Nomination for Pakistani Applicants

Western Australia is consistently among the top recommended states for Pakistani skilled professionals seeking Australia PR. With the largest nomination allocation of any state (5,000 places in 2026), strong demand in sectors where Pakistani professionals excel, and a structured invitation process, WA represents one of the clearest migration pathways available today.

Most In-Demand Occupations for Pakistani Applicants in WA

  • Healthcare: Registered Nurses (all specialisations), General Practitioners, Surgeons, Allied Health Professionals — consistently the top-priority group in every WA invitation round.
  • Engineering: Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, Environmental, and Mining Engineers — WA's resources sector drives continuous demand for qualified engineers.

Why WA Is Especially Attractive for Pakistani Professionals

Western Australia's strong economy, high average salaries, and relatively lower cost of living compared to Sydney or Melbourne make it an excellent long-term destination. Perth offers a growing Pakistani community, excellent schools, modern healthcare, and world-class universities. For applicants in engineering, mining, healthcare, or IT — WA is often the fastest and most realistic route to Australian PR and ultimately citizenship.
