According to the report by a government panel, aged parents are a burden to the health system.
The government of Australia is considering to apply extra charges for the migrants who are trying to bring their parents to Australia. In the last week, the Federal Government’s independent advisory body recommended boosting the fees for immigrant parents. The current fees for parents is 50,000 Australian dollars.
The productivity commission revealed that migrants are a burden for the nation. They don’t hold jobs, means no taxes from them. The cost of admitting a parent is between 335,000 to 410,000 Australian dollars over the course of his or her lifetime.
The report further claims:
“Most of the parents of immigrants make considerable claims on the aged care, health, and social security systems, which is obviously paid by the taxpayers. Unfortunately, most of them don’t work because of their age and health issues. Those who work can’t speak English properly, which results in low earnings and less income tax.”
According to the current law, parents of Australian citizens can apply for the permanent residency
(PR) if their kids are living in Australia. They need to pay around 50 thousand Australian dollars for fast track processing of the immigration. In the other case, you need to wait up to 30 years if you apply pay 6 thousand Australia dollars.
During the last year, 8,675 parents received their permanent residencies and 7,175 parents used the fast track service to get the immigration. On the other hand, 1,500 parents get their immigration through slow and lower fee scheme.
The commission requested to improve the fees for fast track immigrations while keeping the similar charges for the slow scheme. In lower fee scheme, the immigration department should only provide PR to those parents who are “strong.” So, they don’t become a burden on our nation, according to the commission.

Peter Dutton, the immigration minister said that he will consider the commission findings for future changes.
On the other way, the migrant groups are opposing the commission findings. They are asking the government to ease the migration rules for their parent’s immigration rather than making it difficult.
