Study in Canada from Pakistan

Study in Canada — Canadian student visa for Pakistanis

Canada welcomes hundreds of thousands of international students every year, including thousands of Pakistani students seeking world-class education.

Canada is a renowned study destination that welcomes hundreds of thousands of international students each year from numerous countries around the globe. Just like other ambitious students, you too can get a chance to study in one of the most prestigious institutions in Canada. The Canadian Student Visa for Pakistanis is a great opportunity to enhance your knowledge, improve your personality and build a global career.

The first step is to apply for a Canadian Study Permit — the official document issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that allows you to study at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada. Once approved, you may stay in Canada for the full duration of your course or study program.

After completing your studies, you may also apply for Canadian immigration through post-graduation work permits and Express Entry — making a Canadian education one of the most powerful pathways to permanent residency.

Eligibility Criteria for Canadian Student Visa

Canadian student visa eligibility for Pakistanis

Meeting the eligibility criteria is the first and most important step for Pakistani students applying for a Canadian Student Visa.

To qualify for a Canadian Student Visa (Study Permit), Pakistani applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements set by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC):

📄

Acceptance Letter from DLI

You must receive an official acceptance letter from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) — a school, college or university approved by the Canadian government to enroll international students.

💰

Proof of Sufficient Funds

You must prove you have enough money to pay your tuition fees, living expenses in Canada, and return travel costs. A GIC (Guaranteed Investment Certificate) of CAD 10,000 is required for SDS applicants.

🩺

Good Health

You must be in good health. Depending on your country of origin and intended study program, you may be required to undergo a complete medical examination by an IRCC-approved panel physician in Pakistan.

🛡️

No Criminal Record

You must be a law-abiding citizen with no criminal record. A valid Police Clearance Certificate from NADRA or the relevant authority in Pakistan is typically required as part of your application.

🔄

Intent to Return

You must convince the visa officer that you genuinely intend to return to Pakistan upon completion of your studies. Strong ties to your home country (family, property, job offer) significantly strengthen your application.

🗣️

Language Proficiency

Most Canadian universities and the Student Direct Stream (SDS) pathway require a valid IELTS score (minimum 6.0 overall for SDS). TOEFL and PTE scores are also accepted by many institutions.

Student Direct Stream (SDS): Pakistani students can apply through the SDS — a faster processing stream (20 days or less) if they have a valid IELTS score (6.0+), a GIC of CAD 10,000, and an acceptance from a DLI. This is strongly recommended for eligible applicants. Learn more about SDS →

Step-by-Step: How to Apply for Canadian Student Visa from Pakistan

Here is a complete step-by-step guide on how to apply for a study visa for Canada from Pakistan:

  1. 1

Find a College or University Program

Research and shortlist your preferred program and institution in Canada. This is a critical step as it determines your future in Canada. Make sure to apply only to institutions that are Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) recognized by the Canadian Student Visa authorities. Canada is home to 21 of the world's top 500 universities.

You can search for DLIs on the official IRCC DLI list. Also consider province-specific programs — studying outside major cities (like Toronto or Vancouver) can strengthen your immigration prospects through PNP pathways.

  2. 2

Get Admission and Receive Acceptance Letter

Apply to your chosen institution well in advance — at least 6–12 months before your intended start date. For post-secondary programs, apply one year in advance. Once you meet eligibility requirements and pay the course fee, the institution will issue you an offer/acceptance letter — this is mandatory for your study visa application.

Students who wish to improve their English language skills for better immigration points should consider enrolling in IELTS or TOEFL preparation courses before applying — a higher IELTS score directly improves your CRS points for Canadian immigration.

  3. 3

    Prepare Your Documents

Gather all required documents before submitting your Canadian study permit application. An incomplete application is the most common reason for refusal. Our consultants review your complete document file before submission to ensure everything is in order.

  4. 4

Apply for the Canadian Study Permit

Submit your online study permit application through the IRCC online portal. Pay the application fee (CAD 150) and upload all required documents. If eligible, apply through the Student Direct Stream (SDS) for faster processing within 20 days.

  5. 5

    Biometrics and Medical Examination

After submitting your application, you may be asked to provide biometrics at a Visa Application Centre (VFS Global) in Pakistan. A medical examination from an IRCC-approved physician may also be required. Complete both as soon as requested to avoid delays.

  6. 6

Receive Study Permit and Travel to Canada

Upon approval, you will receive a Letter of Introduction confirming your study permit. You will also receive a Visitor Visa (Temporary Resident Visa) or eTA to enter Canada. Present your Letter of Introduction to the immigration officer upon arrival — your actual study permit will be issued at the port of entry.

Work in Canada While Studying

Work in Canada while studying — Canadian student visa

Canadian students can earn while studying through on-campus work, off-campus work permits and co-op programs — a major advantage of the Canadian Student Visa.

One of the biggest advantages of studying in Canada on a Canadian Student Visa is the ability to work while studying. This applies to Pakistani students as well. Once you have your study permit, you may work in Canada under the following categories through Citizenship and Immigration Canada (IRCC) work programs:

🏫 On-Campus Work
No Work Permit Required

Full-time post-secondary students can work on the campus of their institution without a separate work permit. This includes working for the school, a student union, or a private business on campus.

  • No separate work permit needed
  • Must be enrolled full-time at a DLI
  • Social Insurance Number (SIN) required
  • Valid study permit required
🏙️ Off-Campus Work
Up to 24 hrs/week (new 2024 rule)

Eligible full-time students at a DLI can work off-campus. As of November 2024, students can work up to 24 hours per week off-campus during academic sessions (previously 20 hrs).

  • Work up to 24 hrs/week during term
  • Full-time during scheduled breaks
  • Must be enrolled full-time at a DLI
  • SIN and valid study permit required
🎓 Co-op / Internship
Work Permit Required

For programs that include mandatory work experience as part of the curriculum, students can apply for a Co-op Work Permit. The internship must be 50% or less of the total program.

  • Separate co-op work permit required
  • Work experience must be part of curriculum
  • School letter confirming requirement needed
  • Builds Canadian work experience for PR
💑 Spouse Work Permit
For Partner of Student

Common-law partners or spouses of full-time students at eligible institutions may apply for an open work permit with the same duration as the student's study permit.

  • Student must be at a university/college
  • Open work permit — any employer
  • Same duration as student's permit
  • Strengthens family's settlement in Canada

After Graduation — Work & Canadian Immigration

One of the most compelling reasons for Pakistani students to choose Canada is the clear pathway to permanent residency after graduation. Here is how it works:

Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)

After completing your studies at a DLI, you can apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) — an open work permit that allows you to work for any employer in Canada. The duration depends on your program length:

  • Program of 8 months to less than 2 years → PGWP valid for same duration as program
  • Program of 2 years or more → PGWP valid for 3 years
  • Doctoral degree → PGWP valid for 3 years
  • Must apply within 180 days of receiving your final marks

Pathway to Canadian Permanent Residency

The Canadian work experience gained through the PGWP directly contributes to your eligibility for permanent residence through multiple programs:

🍁

Express Entry: The Express Entry system manages three programs for skilled workers — the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Canadian Experience Class (CEC), and Federal Skilled Trades Program. Pakistani graduates with Canadian work experience and IELTS scores are highly competitive in Express Entry draws.

🏛️

Provincial Nominee Program (PNP): Many provinces have specific streams for international graduates. The Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP) allow graduates to obtain a provincial nomination, which adds 600 additional points to their Express Entry CRS score — virtually guaranteeing an Invitation to Apply (ITA).

📊

Check Your CRS Score: Use our Canada CRS Points Calculator to estimate your Express Entry score. A higher IELTS score during your studies will significantly boost your CRS points for immigration after graduation.
