Australia has decided to stop taking new international students in a popular graduate diploma program.
Australia has announced a significant shift in its international education strategy: the new overseas student course, Graduate Diploma of Management (Learning) — BSB80120, will no longer be offered from 5 October 2026.
This does not cover all Australian courses. The decision is applicable to this qualification, for new students from outside the UK.
What Is Changing?
Cricos-registered education providers will no longer be able to:
- Provide new Confirmations of Enrolment (CoE) for BSB80120
- Incorporate new international students into course
- Permit overseas students who have not started the course to start learning
If a student has not enrolled into a CoE by the deadline, the CoE will be automatically cancelled.
Why has Australia made this choice?
The Australian Government found serious and systemic integrity issues with the course. These encompassed unusual patterns of enrolment and transfer, students not beginning or finishing their studies, and potential for the integrity of the student visa system.
The course was said to be being used by some students who were not genuine to transfer to onshore courses and visas. It was also linked with high visa rejection rates and non completion rates.
The Australian Government has taken its first step with the use of its new legal powers to temporarily suspend or cancel the CRICOS registration for a specific course for international students.
What Happens to Current Students?
International students who have already started the Graduate Diploma of Management (Learning) by 5 October 2026 can continue on to complete the qualification with the organisation they already attend.
Students with a CoE who have not begun the course by the deadline, however, will not be allowed to start the course. Their providers should discuss with them options for other courses, placement or appropriate refunds.
This decision does not have a negative impact on domestic students.
What should be done by prospective students?
If you may have been thinking of enrolling into BSB80120 then please check your status with the education provider before making any payment or applications.
You might need to think about taking another CRICOS registered course that:
- Relates to your previous education or work experience
- Supports a clear and realistic career plan
- Follow all the criteria of the visa you want to apply for.
- Is provided by a trusted education provider
It is important for students to realize that a different management degree does not guarantee the same academic or visa opportunity.
This is a significant message as Australia is no longer just looking at the student’s profile. The government is also actively scrutinising courses, education providers, enrolment trends and whether an intended study plan is true to the academic and career goals.
Strategies such as selecting a course for its low cost, ease of entry or usefulness for a longer visa stay can result in significant visa issues. A good Australian study visa application will show the applicant’s Australian academic background, course and future employment plans are connected.
