The Australian state South Australia is in dire need of more skilled migrants under the South Australia State Nomination. This concern was raised by Steven Marshall, the Premier of South Australia, while addressing the Prime Minister of Australia.
Mr. Marshall said that the needs of South Australia, Tasmania, and Northern Territory are different than the metropolitan Australian cities like Sydney and Melbourne, and he thinks that the Designated Area Migration Agreement (DAMA) should be extended to these states as well. This will help meet the shortage of skilled migrants in these regions.
In South Australia, labor shortage is eminent, as the employers are frequently seeking new employees through job advertisements. Due to lesser skilled migrants in South Australia, most of the time they are unable to fill the places with local Australians. Hence, there is a greater need to devise such policies which allows retention of skilled migrants in South Australia.
Can International Students help in curbing the labour shortage?
To encourage people to stay in South Australia, Mr. Marshall is planning to have incentive plans for international students. He is planning policies to increase retention of local residents in South Australia, as 5,000 numbers of people leave South Australia each year.
The SA employers believe that the current Australian immigration policies are only focusing on already popular Australian states like Melbourne and Sydney. The current immigration policies do not address the needs of Australian regional areas. Though a lot of effort is been done by the federal government to invite applicants in the regional areas it is not turning into reality.
South Australia State Nomination is a point based immigration program. If the eligibility requirements are met, it allows an applicant to come and settle in South Australia on a permanent basis
