The current statistics show that a large number of candidates arriving in New Zealand as a result of New Zealand immigration tend to settle in Auckland. The number of arrivals in the city is greater than the net departures. This shows that around 600 new migrants settle in the city on an average.
The net migration rate hits a record of 68,000 migrants a conference will be held this Friday to reveal how much more migrants are welcome in the city.
Currently, a large number of immigrants move to NZ as a result of skilled New Zealand immigration. This is because the employers are short of skilled workers to carry out their businesses. As a result, they have to hire foreign skilled workers. This difference in the demand and supply of skilled workers is affecting the infrastructure of Auckland, said Paul Spoonley – a sociologist at Massey University.
New Zealand immigration has revealed a great impact on Auckland as housing prices and transportation is greatly affected. The population is growing abruptly in the area and current resources are not enough to satisfy the needs of all citizens.
As per Professor Spoonley, if New Zealand immigration is not controlled, Auckland will face issues of providing enough places in schools, colleges, universities, hospitals and other basic needs will be greatly affected.
Michael Barnett, the head of Auckland Chamber of Commerce said that while it is not known for sure whether or not the incoming migrants are responsible for housing shortages in Auckland, one thing is clear that the skills are not rightly targeted in the interest of the needs of Auckland.
He said construction is the current need of the city and we need more and more buildings. Therefore, people skilled in building houses should be allowed migration in a greater number as compared to other skill areas.
Experts say that a city should not accommodate more than 1.5 million people. It is important to keep the city lively. Auckland was ranked 9th as per the Economist Intelligence Unit but is it still liveable, this is yet to be revealed.
