The Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has said they will be charging more money for people who want to apply to become permanent residents in Canada starting from April 30, 2024.
They’ve been raising these fees every two years since 2020, and this time the increase is quite big, especially when compared to the last time they raised the fees in 2022.
In April 2022, there was a small fee rise, around 3%. However, the fees are set to go up by about 12-13% starting from April 30, 2024.
This increase is calculated based on the combined percentage rise in the Consumer Price Index, which is a measure of inflation, released by Statistics Canada in the past two years (2022 and 2023). To the closest $5, the amount is adjusted.
Exceptions to Permanent Residency Fees and Application Conditions
It’s important to note that while most applicants for permanent residency will have to pay higher fees, there are exceptions. Dependent children and protected individuals don’t have to pay the Right of Permanent Residence Fee.
Under certain conditions, individuals who are principal applicants in the “humanitarian and compassionate” and “public policy” categories may be exempt from paying the Right of Permanent Residence Fee.
Accompanying family members cannot be included in the permanent residency applications of individuals in the “Permit Holder” class.
Those in this category must submit their applications as principal applicants.
