Eligibility for Canada Child Benefit

To qualify for the Canada Child Benefit (CCB), families or individuals must meet specific eligibility criteria set by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).

One of the requirements is having children under the age of eighteen who reside with you and rely on you as their primary caregiver.

Additionally, applicants must file their taxes each year, even if they have no income to declare, and be classified as residents of Canada for tax purposes.

Income levels also play a significant role in determining the amount of Canada Child Benefit received.

Because the benefit is income-tested, families with higher incomes may receive reduced payments or no benefits at all compared to households with lower incomes.

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) calculates Canada Child Benefit payments based on your family’s adjusted net income from the previous year.

CCB Estimator

The Canada Child Benefit payments for the period from July 2023 to June 2024 are determined based on the adjusted family net income from the tax year 2022.

For a single child:

A household with an adjusted family net income (AFNI) of $34,863 in 2022 is entitled to receive the maximum tax-free benefit for one child during the monthly payment period from July 2023 to June 2024:

  1. Each child under six years old is eligible to receive $7,437 per year or $619.75 monthly.
  2. $6,275 per year, or $522.91 per month, for each child aged six to seventeen.

If the family’s adjusted net income exceeds $34,863, the benefit amount is reduced. This reduction is outlined in the table below.

Key Dates for Canada’s Child Benefit

Families need to mark their calendars with important dates related to the Canada Child Benefit to ensure they receive their entitlements without delay.

The Canada Child Benefit (CCB) is typically distributed monthly, with payments scheduled for the twentieth of each month. If the twentieth falls on a weekend or holiday, payments are made on the preceding business day.

Moreover, filing taxes by certain deadlines set by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is vital for maintaining regular CCB payments.

For most individuals, the annual tax filing deadline is April 30th. However, self-employed individuals, along with their spouses and common-law partners, have until June 15th to file their taxes.

To avoid any interruptions or postponements in CCB payments, it’s essential to file taxes promptly.
