Overview of Invitation Rounds for Subclass 189 and 491 Visa

Invitation rounds for the Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) and the Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491) – Family Sponsored take place at regular intervals throughout the program year. The amount of invites sent out in each round may vary depending on the volume of current applicants.

It is important to note that state or territory government nominations for skilled visas are separate from the departmental invitation procedures.

Invitation Process for EOIs

The invitation process prioritizes the most highly ranked EOIs based on points. EOIs with higher point scores will be prioritized and contacted before those with lower scores.

When numerous EOIs have the same points score, the date and time when each EOI achieved that score, known as the ‘tie break’ or ‘day of effect,’ is used. EOIs with an earlier date of effect will be given priority over those with a later date.

Steps After Receiving an Invitation

Receiving an invitation for the 189 visa is an exciting milestone, but it’s just the beginning of the formal application process. Once invited, applicants need to:

  • Gather required documents, including proof of identity, qualifications, work experience, and English language test results.
  • Submit a formal visa application through the DHA’s online platform.
  • Complete health and character assessments to confirm your eligibility.
  • Wait for a final decision on the visa application, which can take several months depending on processing times.

Staying organized and ensuring all documentation is correct will help avoid delays in the application process.

Understanding Occupation Ceilings

An ‘occupation ceiling’ limits the number of Expressions of Interest (EOIs) that can be requested from specific occupational categories. This is intended to ensure that the skilled migration program is consistent with Australia’s aims, remains balanced, and attracts a varied spectrum of professionals.

The following visas are exempt from occupation ceilings.

  1. Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190)
  2. Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491) – State and Territory Nominated
