June 5, 2024BY Sheraz

Numerous Canadian immigration programs in Canada necessitate that applicants pass a language test to qualify for application.

This article will offer a summary of essential information regarding the necessity of a language test for individuals on their immigration path to Canada. It will outline which programs mandate language tests and identify the types of language tests recognized by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

What Canadian Immigration Programs Require a Language Test?

As per IRCC, there are currently 12 economic immigration programs that require applicants to take a language test to qualify. These programs include:

  1. Agri-Food Pilot
  2. Atlantic Immigration Program
  3. Caregivers
  4. Economic Mobility Pathways Pilot
  5. Federal Internship for Newcomers Program
  6. Pathways to Permanent Residence for Residents from Hong Kong
  7. Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot

The three initiatives overseen by the application management system for Express Entry:

What Canadian Immigration Programs Require a Language Test

What Should I Do Next If I Need a Language Test?

If you’re required to undergo a language test for an economic immigration program, you ought to:

  1. Schedule your test with an approved testing agency.
  2. Pay the fee for the language test.*

*Note: The cost of the language test can differ based on the agency that administers it.

Accepted Language Tests by IRCC

IRCC accepts five different language tests in total: three for English and two for French. They are:

English

1. Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP)

  • Candidates must take the CELPIP-General test.

2. International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

  • Applicants are required to undertake the IELTS General Training option.

3. Pearson Test of English (PTE) Core

  • Candidates must take the PTE Core option.

French

  1. Test d’évaluation de français (TEF) Canada
  2. Test de connaissance du français (TCF) Canada

What Should be My Next Steps Once I Receive Test Results?

After you take the test, IRCC will verify your test results with the testing organizations to confirm your language skills.

Your next steps will depend on whether you are applying through IRCC’s Express Entry system or another program:

Express Entry Applicants:

  • Input your test outcomes directly into the online profile established with IRCC.

All Other Candidates:

  • Attach a copy of your test results to your application when submitting it to IRCC.

Important Note: Test scores utilized for Canadian immigration remain valid if they are within two years of your permanent residence application submission. If your test results are about to expire, consider retaking the test and updating your Express Entry profile with the new results.
