Labour Shortage as Auckland Construction “Goes Off”

The construction industry in Auckland, New Zealand is running short of labourers despite the building boom. This is leading to new job openings hence making room for foreign workers.

The recruitment company Labour Exchange is spending a large sum of money for the sole purpose of advertising these job vacancies.

Managing Director David Devereux says that their company has been stretching day by day. The clients are starting more and more construction projects hence the work on their part being increased as a result.

Moreover, he says that although they have been doing most of their projects in time but still there are some projects that have passed the deadline and have not been completed yet.

The construction companies have been hiring labourers offshore. The Australian government is coping with them in the process to meet the labourer needs. As a measure, the government has relaxed the immigration policies for Canterbury so more and more labourers can be made of help. David Devereux demands the same for Auckland.

Some other important figures from the construction industry are demanding the need to revise immigration policies. According to Building Industry Federation chief executive Bruce Kohn, the need to allow more and more skilled persons is not limited to the construction company. We cannot have all the talent we require within the city of Auckland, New Zealand.

Looking at the bigger picture, we need people from offshore because it allows the accumulation of a variety of talent within the city. He demands the matter to be reviewed right now by the government officials so the immigrations can be made possible.
