Northwest Territories (NWT) is going to open more than 36,700 new job positions within the next 15 years. Therefore, NWT government is all set to launch new immigration strategy. The government want to ensure that the economy remains on a fast track.
Northwest Territories Immigration Strategy 2017-2022
The basic theme behind above-mentioned strategy deals with the building of a Skilled Workforce, which in the end may boost country’s economy. In order to achieve this goal, the government must provide necessary assistance to fill such positions. Moreover, some kind of post-secondary education or work experience may also be required.
Attracting foreign skilled labor is the primary goal of this particular strategy. It also includes engaging new entrepreneurs, simplifying the administrative procedure. The Government of Northwest Territories is ready to provide required support to foreign nationals regarding their settlement and integration in the province.
Action Plan to Achieve Five Clear Goals
The NWT government has devised an action plan to achieve following goals:
- Engage foreign nationals to make an investment by purchasing or establishing a new business.
- Engage those foreign nationals who possess skills, which are aligned with present workforce requirements.
- Be supportive and responsive while fulfilling the integration and settlement needs of such foreign nationals.
- Maintain a collaborative working relationship between concerned departments such as departments of Tourism and Investment (ITI), Education, Immigration and Culture and Employment (ECE).
- Educate NWT employers and foreign nationals with reference to the responsibilities and rights of workers.
Alfred Moses, the NWT Minister of Education, Culture, and Employment shared these words.
“The Strategy will serve as a blueprint for a territorial approach to optimizing immigration programs in the NWT over the next five years. Beyond the economic benefits, welcoming new people to our territory contributes to the vibrant, diverse cultural landscape that makes the North a unique place to live”.
Employer Stream Categories
Following are the categories, which relate with the employer stream:
- Express Entry for skilled workers: This program is for those skilled foreign nationals who seek a valid position in the Express Entry pool of Immigration, Refugee, and Citizenship Canada.
- Critical impact workers: This category is intended to maximize the number of labor pool by attracting skilled workers. Moreover, qualified individuals will also be encouraged to seek specialized training or formal education.
- Business Stream: This stream is bound to attract such entrepreneurs who possess necessary business experience. Also, they require some investment to settle down in the NWT.
Apart from the nominee program, the Northwest Territories (NWT) can also engage prospective immigrants through their numerous federal programs.
The comprehensive details of the above plan are not available in the strategic document. However, the basic idea to be followed by the NWT government is to divert relevant resources and globally market the ideal economic indicators of NWT. This part of Canada is a perfect place to live and work. Hence, NWT government is streamlining the procedure associated with the approval of immigration applications. Besides this, the province is planning to provide required support for the newcomers who are trying to settle in the territory.
