In June 2023, the ex-Canadian Immigration Minister shared plans to make Canada more appealing to digital nomads as part of the Tech Talent Strategy. This means they want people who work remotely from different places to consider Canada.
However, it’s essential to know that this plan is still in the early stages. The organization responsible for immigration in Canada, called IRCC, has not turned it into a complete plan yet. So, while it sounds interesting, it’s not fully formed.
Understanding the Canada Digital Nomad Visa
The New Digital Nomad Visa of Canada allows individuals who can work from anywhere in the world to come to Canada for up to six months. They can work remotely for their foreign employers during this time while holding visitor status, which is essentially a visitor visa for working professionals.
The goal set by the IRCC is to process visitor visa applications for digital nomads within two months of receiving a complete application, making the process efficient and quick.
Digital nomads who come to Canada initially to work remotely can also apply for a work permit that can last up to three years if they receive a job offer from a Canadian employer. This experience can improve their chances of applying for permanent residency in Canada through various immigration programs.
Additionally, IRCC has expressed its intent to collaborate with public and private partners to explore whether additional policies are needed to make Canada more appealing to digital nomads.
Requirements for Canada Digital Nomad Visa
As of now, the Canada Digital Nomad Visa doesn’t have specific requirements laid out by the IRCC (Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada). The information available mainly focuses on who might be eligible for this visa.
For digital nomads interested in applying, the current practice is to seek a regular Canada visitor visa. To support their application, they should provide documentation demonstrating their current job outside of Canada and a “no objection” certificate or evidence that their employer permits them to work remotely from anywhere globally.
It’s important to note that although this material may assist the IRCC in categorizing individuals as digital nomads, there are no specific and formal conditions established by the IRCC for this visa category. Having evidence of an ongoing job, even while applying for a normal visiting or tourist visa, helps the case, especially when compared to people with no employment links outside of Canada.
Who Are Digital Nomads?
People who live a life of working from home and traveling, made possible by technology and the internet, are known as digital nomads.
They tend to adopt a minimalist approach when it comes to their belongings, opting for only essential possessions. Their work takes place in various temporary settings, including hotels, coffee shops, public libraries, co-working spaces, or even recreational vehicles. To stay connected and productive, digital nomads rely on the use of Wi-Fi, smartphones, and mobile hotspots for internet access. This lifestyle allows them the freedom to roam, work from diverse locations, and explore new places while still fulfilling their professional commitments.
