Australian Immigration Minister Peter Dutton accuses refugee advocates for the increasing self-harm practices on the detention camps. While addressing the press, he further adds that the refugee advocates are responsible for giving false hopes to the asylum seekers. The Australian government never promised that every asylum seeker will be taken to Australia.
After the incident of a 21 years old Somali young woman setting herself to fire, a ceasefire broke in Australia. General public has been protesting. UN is blaming Australia’s hard-line immigration policies.
The young woman is only identified by her last name Hadon. According to local officials, she was brought to Australia for her treatment.
Another Iranian man set himself on fire. Before doing so, he informed the UN officials on visit that this will tell how tired and exhausted we are.
Dutton claims that these acts of self-harm are not because people are having health issues in Nauru. He further adds that these acts are not due to the financial sufferings or living conditions. The refugee advocates are responsible for these acts.
UN High Commissioner for Refugees blames Australian immigration policies for the acts. UN criticizes the immigration department for sending the refugees at camps in Nauru and Manus Island as asylum seekers.
The people in camps are mainly from Middle East, Afghanistan and South Asia. These are the people who flee to Australia to seek shelter from fled war and persecution. There are approximately 500 such people in the camps.
UN officials think that these people have been through enough already and the offshore processing at camps by Australian immigration department is an additional torment.
The medical experts also are of view that the offshore processing is badly affecting the mental and physical health of the asylum seekers.
Moreover, Refugee Action Coalition in Sydney reported that the new hospital in Nauru is incapable of treating the patients with insufficient medical supplies. Further, Dutton has no evidence against the refugee advocates in support of his allegations.
The government has no idea about the outcomes of this offshore processing policy. They are experimenting new rules and regulations at the expense of the lives of asylum seekers.
