Complete guide to studying in Australia from Pakistan — Subclass 500 visa, eligibility criteria, 7 subclasses, application process, work rights and pathway to Australian permanent residency.
Australia is the 3rd largest destination for international students globally, welcoming thousands of Pakistani students every year.
Australia is the 3rd largest country accommodating international students in the world — after the UK and USA — despite having a population of only 26 million people. The world's top 100 universities include 7 Australian universities, which is one of the key reasons why the Australian Student Visa is so popular among Pakistani and other international students.
Australia offers a wide range of up to 22,000 courses across 1,100 institutions in the country. It has consistently ranked among the top nations in higher education globally. The Australian Department of Home Affairs manages the student visa program, which is officially called Subclass 500.
The Australian government provides more than AUD 200 million in fellowships and scholarships to enrolled and prospective international students. Australian universities have produced groundbreaking discoveries including penicillin, IVF, ultrasound, Wi-Fi, the bionic ear, the cervical cancer vaccine, and the Black Box flight recorder — a testament to Australia's world-leading academic environment.
Australia in Global Rankings: Out of the top 30 cities worldwide best known for student mix, affordability, quality of life and employment opportunities, 5 are located in Australia. More than 2.5 million international students have completed degree programs in Australia and are now enjoying successful global careers.
Australia's stunning cities, world-class universities and student-friendly policies make it one of the most sought-after study destinations for Pakistani students.
7 Australian universities rank in the world's top 100. Australian degrees are globally recognised and respected by employers worldwide, giving graduates a strong competitive edge in the international job market.
Australian Student Visa holders can work up to 48 hours per fortnight during academic sessions and unlimited hours during semester breaks — a significant advantage for Pakistani students managing living costs.
Australia is one of the most multicultural nations in the world. Pakistani students find a welcoming, inclusive environment with large South Asian communities in all major cities including Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.
The Australian government provides over AUD 200 million in scholarships and fellowships to international students. The prestigious Australia Awards scholarship is fully funded and open to Pakistani applicants.
After graduation, students can apply for the Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485) — allowing up to 5 years of work experience in Australia. This experience directly supports applications for Australian Skilled Immigration.
Studying in Australia opens a clear pathway to Australian Skilled Immigration through Subclass 189, 190 and 491 visas. Australian qualifications earn valuable points in the Australian Points Test.
Students willing to undertake a formal course of study in Australia can apply for the Australian Student Visa (Subclass 500). Under Subclass 500, there are 7 assessment levels based on the main course you choose to study. Your assessment level depends on your passport country and the academic course you are applying for.
Specifically designed to provide certification in the English language. Certificates are graded I, II, III and IV — you can obtain any of the four stand-alone certifications. There is no formal academic award for this stream.
For students pursuing primary, junior secondary or senior secondary school courses in Australia. This subclass also allows foreign students to study under the secondary school exchange program.
Applicable for Certificate I, II, III or IV courses at an Australian educational institution. This subclass does not apply to VET Diploma, VET Advanced Diploma, Vocational Graduate Certificate or Vocational Graduate Diploma.
For students pursuing bachelor degree, associate degree, graduate certificate, graduate diploma, higher education diploma, advanced diploma or masters by coursework at an Australian university or higher education provider.
For students applying for a Masters by Research or Doctoral (PhD) Degree at an Australian university. Research programs are heavily funded and supported by Australian universities with numerous scholarship opportunities.
For students enrolled in non-award courses or foundation programs designed to prepare international students for entry into bachelor or higher degree programs at Australian universities.
The Student Guardian Visa allows a parent or guardian to accompany a student under 18 years of age (or students with a specific welfare need) to Australia for the duration of their study.

To qualify for an Australian Student Visa (Subclass 500), Pakistani applicants must meet the following requirements set by the Department of Home Affairs:
Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE): This is one of the most important criteria. You must demonstrate strong ties to Pakistan (family, property, employment prospects) and a genuine intention to return after completing your studies. A well-prepared GTE statement is critical for approval.
Research and shortlist your preferred course and institution. Make sure the institution is CRICOS-registered. Consider course duration, tuition fees, graduate employment outcomes and location. Immigration Experts can help you identify the best university match based on your academic profile and budget.
Apply to your chosen institution. Once accepted and fees are paid, the institution issues a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) — the key document required for your student visa application. You cannot apply for the visa without a valid CoE.
Purchase OSHC from an approved Australian health insurance provider before or when applying for your visa. This is a mandatory requirement for all student visa applicants. Some universities arrange OSHC on your behalf.
Gather all required documents including your CoE, IELTS/PTE scores, financial evidence, GTE statement, passport photos, and health/character documents. Our consultants thoroughly review your document file before submission to avoid delays or refusals.
Submit your student visa application online through the Department of Home Affairs ImmiAccount portal. Pay the visa application fee (AUD 710). Upload all required documents and your completed GTE statement.
After submitting your application, you may be asked to provide biometrics and complete a medical examination with an approved panel physician in Pakistan. Complete these requests promptly to avoid processing delays.
Upon approval, your student visa grant notice will be emailed to you. Your visa is electronically linked to your passport — there is no visa label. Present your passport and visa grant notice to immigration officers upon arrival in Australia. Your visa will be valid for the duration of your course plus a short grace period.
