Complete guide to the UK Skilled Worker Visa for Pakistani nationals — eligibility, salary thresholds, certificate of sponsorship, application process, fees and pathway to UK permanent settlement.
The UK Skilled Worker Visa replaced the Tier 2 (General) work visa and is the main route for Pakistani professionals to work and settle in the United Kingdom.
The UK Skilled Worker Visa allows foreign nationals — including Pakistani professionals — to come to or stay in the United Kingdom to do an eligible job with an approved employer. This visa has replaced the former Tier 2 (General) work visa and is now the primary route for skilled workers to legally work and settle in the UK.
Managed by the UK Home Office, the Skilled Worker Visa offers a clear pathway to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) — UK permanent settlement — after 5 years of continuous residence. It is one of the most sought-after immigration routes for Pakistani doctors, nurses, engineers, IT professionals and other skilled workers.
Important 2025 Update: The UK government has significantly increased the minimum salary threshold for the Skilled Worker Visa. The general minimum salary is now £38,700 per year (up from £26,200). Healthcare and education workers have separate, lower thresholds. Always check the current requirements on the official UK Home Office website →
To qualify for the UK Skilled Worker Visa, Pakistani applicants must meet specific job, salary, sponsorship and English language requirements.
To qualify for a UK Skilled Worker Visa, Pakistani applicants must meet ALL of the following requirements:
You must work for a UK employer approved by the Home Office as a licensed sponsor. The employer must hold a valid Skilled Worker sponsor licence. Not all UK employers are licensed — your job offer must be from an approved sponsor.
Your employer must issue you a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) — a unique reference number containing details about your role, salary and employment conditions in the UK. You cannot apply for the visa without a valid CoS.
Your job must appear on the UK's list of eligible occupations. The list covers roles across healthcare, engineering, IT, finance, education, construction and many other sectors.
You must be paid a minimum salary — the exact amount depends on your occupation. The general minimum is £38,700 per year (2025). Lower thresholds apply for shortage occupations and specific sectors like healthcare.
You must be able to speak, read, write and understand English. You'll usually need to prove your English language ability — through an approved test like IELTS for UKVI, or by holding a degree taught in English.
You must prove you have at least £1,270 in personal savings (held for 28 consecutive days before applying) — unless your sponsor certifies they will cover your first month's accommodation and living costs.
Confirmed Job Offer Required: You must have a confirmed, genuine job offer from an approved UK sponsor before applying for this visa. The job offer must be at or above the required salary threshold for your occupation code.
The minimum salary you must be paid depends on your job type. Here is the breakdown of the 2025 Skilled Worker Visa salary thresholds:
| Applicant Type | Minimum Annual Salary | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| General (New Entrants) | £30,960/yr | For new entrants to the labour market (recent graduates, under 26) |
| General (Experienced) | £38,700/yr | Standard threshold for most skilled worker roles (2025 rate) |
| Shortage Occupation List | £30,960/yr | Roles on the UK Immigration Salary List receive a 20% discount |
| NHS / Health & Care Workers | NHS Pay Scale | Follows NHS Agenda for Change pay bands — typically lower than general threshold |
| Education Workers | £30,960/yr | Teachers and education professionals may have lower thresholds |
| PhD Level Roles | £34,830/yr | Roles requiring PhD-level qualifications receive a 10% discount |
Health & Care Worker Visa: If you are a doctor, nurse, or work in health or adult social care, you may qualify for the Health and Care Worker Visa — a cheaper alternative that exempts you from the Immigration Health Surcharge, saving thousands of pounds.
The UK offers several work visa routes depending on your profession, skill level and circumstances. Here are the main UK work visa options for Pakistani nationals:
The primary route for skilled Pakistani professionals with a confirmed UK job offer from an approved sponsor. Leads to ILR after 5 years.
For qualified doctors, nurses and health/social care professionals. Cheaper application fee and no Immigration Health Surcharge — saving thousands.
For exceptionally talented or promising individuals in academia, research, arts, culture or digital technology. No job offer required — but endorsement from an approved UK body is needed.
For senior managers and specialist employees transferred from an overseas branch to a UK branch of the same company. Requires high salary threshold.
For international students who completed a degree at a UK university. Allows 2–3 years of open work rights to find skilled employment — then switch to Skilled Worker Visa.
Several short-term work options are available for Pakistanis including the Seasonal Worker Visa, Creative Worker Visa and Government Authorised Exchange Visa.
You must first secure a confirmed job offer from a Home Office-approved UK employer. Check that the employer holds a valid Skilled Worker sponsor licence by searching the official register of licensed sponsors. The job must be at the required skill level and salary threshold.
Your employer assigns you a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) reference number. This CoS contains your job title, occupation code, salary and the start date of your employment. You must have this reference number before submitting your visa application.
Gather all required documents — passport, CoS reference number, English language proof, financial evidence and any additional documents specific to your occupation. Immigration Experts reviews your complete document file before submission to minimise the risk of refusal.
Submit your application online via the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) online portal. You can apply up to 3 months before your intended start date as listed on your CoS. Pay the visa application fee and Immigration Health Surcharge online.
After submitting your online application, book a biometrics appointment at VFS Global in Islamabad, Lahore or Karachi. You'll provide your fingerprints and photograph. Bring your original documents to the appointment.
If applying from outside the UK, you'll usually receive a decision within 3 weeks of completing your biometrics appointment. Upon approval, you'll receive a visa vignette in your passport to travel to the UK, followed by a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) upon arrival.
Priority Service Available: If you need a faster decision, a Priority Visa Service is available at UK Visa Application Centres in Pakistan for an additional fee. This typically gives a decision within 5 working days instead of 3 weeks.
The cost of a UK Skilled Worker Visa includes the visa application fee + Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS). Both must be paid online at the time of application:
| Fee Type | Duration | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Visa Application Fee (up to 3 years) | Up to 3 years | £719 |
| Visa Application Fee (over 3 years) | 3–5 years | £1,420 |
| Health & Care Worker Visa (reduced) | Any duration | £284 |
| Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) | Per year of stay | £1,035/yr |
| Priority Service (optional) | 5-day decision | £500 |
| Super Priority Service (optional) | Next-day decision | £1,000 |
Important: The Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) of £1,035 per year must be paid upfront for the full visa duration. For a 5-year visa, this means paying £5,175 for IHS alone. Health and Care Workers are exempt from IHS — a major financial saving. Fees are subject to change — always verify on the official UK Home Office website.
Your UK Skilled Worker Visa can last for up to 5 years before you need to extend it. You can extend your visa as many times as you like, as long as you continue to meet the eligibility requirements.
After living and working in the UK for 5 continuous years on a Skilled Worker Visa (or a combination of eligible visa categories), you may apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) — also known as UK permanent settlement. ILR gives you the right to:
British Citizenship: After holding ILR for 12 months and meeting the continuous residence requirements, you can apply for British citizenship through naturalisation. This gives you a British passport and full rights as a British citizen — including the right to live, work and vote in the UK and travel visa-free to 190+ countries.
You can include your partner (spouse or civil partner) and dependent children in your Skilled Worker Visa application. They will typically be granted the same visa duration as you. Your dependants can:
You must apply to extend your Skilled Worker Visa before it expires if you wish to continue living and working in the UK. You can apply online through the UK Visas and Immigration portal. If your visa expires before you extend it, you may lose your right to remain in the UK.
If you change your job or employer while on a Skilled Worker Visa, you must apply to update your visa — even if you are staying in the same occupation. You will need a new Certificate of Sponsorship from your new employer before applying for the update.
If you are already in the UK on another visa (such as a Student Visa or Graduate Visa), you may be eligible to switch to the Skilled Worker Visa without leaving the UK — provided you have a confirmed job offer from an approved sponsor and meet all eligibility requirements.
Graduate to Skilled Worker: If you studied at a UK university and received the Graduate Visa (2-year open work permit), you can switch to the Skilled Worker Visa once you have secured a qualifying job offer from an approved UK employer. This is one of the most popular pathways for Pakistani students in the UK.
