Canada Raises Study Permit Financial Requirement for Kenyan Students From September 1, 2026

While the whole process is still underway, it’s important to note that Canada raised its financial requirement for Kenyan students starting from September 1, 2026.

As of September 1, 2026, Canadian study permit applicants from Kenya, who are applying for their study permit from outside Quebec, will need proof of funds for 1 year of living costs of at least CAD 23,448. Understand the new family amounts, acceptable proof of funds and preparation.

Kenyan students who wish to study in Canada will be required to have a higher financial requirement from September 1st, 2026. This change is not a closure of the doors to international students, it is just a change. It is an annual adjustment designed to account for the increases in the cost of living in the country.

If you have a real plan for studying, then the message is straightforward: Start financial planning early, keep record of financial plans and submit documents that show where your money is coming from and that it is truly yours.

So, what is the amount of money that is required for the new Canada study permit?

For a study permit application to Canada for a province or territory other than Quebec, a minimum of CAD 23,448 must be provided to cover the cost of one year of living expenses, for persons who apply for a study permit on or after September 1, 2026.

This amount does not include:

• Tuition fees
• Fares for travel to and from Canada.
• Catering to accompanying family members’ cost of living

Applicants should be able to provide the information to cover these additional costs on their own.

The old requirement for living expenses was CAD 22,895. Thus, the new amount being CAD 553, it is an increase for one applicant.

Applicants will be charged an extra CAD 6,318 per extra family member for groups larger than 7.

These figures are for Quebec and outside Quebec. Any student planning to pursue studies in Quebec must adhere to the financial obligations associated with the Quebec Acceptance Certificate, as well as to the provincial guidelines.

Does this mean that Canada will not allow international students?

The rise does not automatically have to be regarded as a new crackdown on students. The living-experience requirement is regularly adjusted based on the cost of housing, food, transportation and other living expenses.

The required amount was CAD 10,000 in 2023. It increased to CAD 20,635 in January 2024 and then to CAD 22,895 in January 2025. The September 2026 number is part of the adjustment process.

For Kenyan students, this translates to studying in Canada being still an option, but with more realistic budgeting. Students should not take a decision on a minimum figure only, but should make a calculation of the actual cost of the city they have chosen, and of the institution and programme chosen.

The common error is to mistake financial capacity with maintaining the proper money balance in a bank account. Immigration officers can evaluate:

• The source of the funds:
• The duration that the money has been held for;
• This will be determined by whether the money is actually available to the student.
• The income of the sponsor, commitments and dependants of the sponsor.
• As of the date of the report, whether recent large deposits have been explained.
• How the student will pay for the remaining years of study

Where a programme is more than a year, applicants must describe and justify their plans to fund future tuition and living costs. This can be shown by a continued family income, job, business income, saving account, scholarships or some other viable financial plan.

Documents That May Support Proof of Funds.

Submitting supporting documentation is an option and can consist of the following:

• A bank statement for the previous 6 months.
• Documentation of where the savings or deposit comes from
• Receiving receipts for tuition and on-campus room and board.Receipts for tuition and residence in the college.
• Scholarship/funding letters
• Education loan approval documents.
• Request letters from sponsors and the proof of the relationship.Ask for sponsor letters and proof of the relationship.
• Employment letters, payslips and tax records
• Business Registration, Income record and tax documents
• Documentation of rental or investment income.

Submitting more documents does not necessarily make an application stronger. Evidence should be relevant, consistent and understandable by the visa officer.

How Kenyan Students Can Prepare

It is important to start preparing well in advance when planning to apply for the 2026 or 2027 intake.

First, you should determine the full first-year expenses (tuition, room and board, traveling and costs of accompanying family members). Then, make sure that the selected course is sensible based on the interviewee’s previous education and career plans. Last but not least, keep a clear financial trail and avoid mysterious, late night deposits.

A good study permit application typically reads as a cohesive whole. The academic background, programme chosen and career aims should complement each other and be backed up by financial evidence.

While the new requirement may require more funding for studying in Canada, it does not mean that the opportunity will be lost. The new rules do not prevent those students who plan ahead and substantiate their claims to access Canadian education.
