As of June 16, 2023, at approximately 2:55 pm EST, the population of Canada has officially exceeded 40 million individuals, according to the real-time clock tracking Canada’s population in 2023.

From January 1, 2022, to January 1, 2023, Canada experienced a remarkable surge in population, with a record increase of 1,050,110 individuals. This marked a significant milestone in Canadian history as it was the first 12-month period ever where the population grew by over one million people. Furthermore, this growth rate of +2.7% during that period was the highest annual population increase since 1957, which saw a growth rate of +3.3%.

In the year 2022, Canada maintained its position as the leading nation in population growth among the G7 countries.

During this particular quarter, the majority of the population rise, accounting for 97.7%, was attributed to immigration. It is significant to note that this quarter witnessed the largest projected net increase of non-permanent residents, with a notable influx of 196,262 individuals. Within this group, 83,152 were immigrants who contributed to the population growth during the fourth quarter of 2022.

According to a recent report from Statistics Canada, temporary immigration stands out as the primary driver of population growth in Canada.

Additionally, there was a significant net increase in non-permanent residents, estimated at 607,782 individuals. These figures not only underscore Canada’s increased focus on immigration objectives but also signify a groundbreaking year for the processing of immigration applications by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

In 2022, there was a notable year-over-year increase in the projected net number of non-permanent temporary residents across all provinces and territories in Canada.

Furthermore, both the issuance of new work permits and study permits, along with the number of asylum seekers, witnessed a significant rise throughout the country in 2022.
