Ontario’s selected more than 1,600 Express Entry candidates with CRS scores as low as 439 in its first Tech Draw

Ontario invited 1,623 Express Entry candidates on July 12 through its TECH DRAW. The invited candidates with eligible work experience can now apply for a provincial nomination for Canadian permanent residence.

Those Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) scores of candidates invited in the July 12 draw were in the range of 439 to 459. Their Express Entry profiles were submitted between July 12, 2018, to July 12, 2019.

It was announced by Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) earlier this month that it will now start to conduct Tech Draws. This initiative was taken to meet the growing labour needs of the province’s tech sector.

Potential candidates must have an eligible profile registered under the Federal Skilled Worker or Canadian Experience Class of the Express Entry system in order to be considered for a Tech Draw invitation.

Candidates in the Express Entry pool are assigned a CRS score based on factors such as age, education, skilled work experience and proficiency in English or French.

Candidates selected by a province get an additional 600 CRS points which maximize their chances to receive an invitation to apply (ITA) for Canadian permanent residence in a subsequent draw from the Express Entry pool.

A brief on Ontario’s Tech Draws:

Ontario is home to several of Canada’s major tech hubs, notably those in the cities of Toronto, Ottawa and Waterloo.

According to the CBRE Group, Tech companies in Toronto alone have reportedly created more tech jobs than the San Francisco Bay area in 2017,.

OINP Tech Draws are operated under the province’s Human Capital Priorities immigration stream. This stream allows the OINP to search for candidates from the federal Express Entry pool who meet the stream’s eligibility requirements.

No job offer is required in order to be eligible for the Human Capital Priorities Stream.

To be eligible for the Human Capital Priorities Stream, candidates must have at least one year of continuous paid full-time work experience (or the equivalent in paid part-time work) in one of the six targeted tech occupations will be selected in regular Tech Draws.

Candidates with experience in the following occupations will be considered in the Tech Draws;

  • Software engineers and designers (NOC 2173)
  • Computer programmers and interactive media developers (NOC 2174)
  • Computer engineers (NOC 2147)
  • Web designers and developers (NOC 2175)
  • Database analysts and data administrators (NOC 2172)
  • Computer and information systems managers (NOC 0213)
